As the wildfires continue to rage in Northern California, and Puerto Rico continues to reel in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, those in Mexico City are still mourning while scrambling to re-build, and people throughout Houston and Florida are still in the process of re-building their homes and their lives, we want to take a moment to reflect on the unspeakable tragedy that took place two weeks ago in our home away from home, Las Vegas.

We don’t want to spend any time reflecting on the monster who perpetrated this attack but rather, we’d like to focus on the unbelievable acts of kindness, bravery and heroism that continue to come to light as a result. As show organizers for COUTURE, we have the privilege and honor of working closely with Las Vegas-based staff at the Wynn and Encore, as well as a number of vendors, photographers, writers and other Vegas-based talent, so we are not at all surprised by the #VegasStrong spirit that is in full effect. We also recognize that millions of people from across the globe consider Vegas their personal playground and as such, their pride in its multi-faceted, diverse and extraordinary community inspired so many people to support by way of prayers, cash donations, food, water and blood donations, free hotel stays, free flights, free Lyft and Uber rides and, in one case, 58 crosses representing each person who lost their life on the night of October 1.

Mr. Rogers once famously said, “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'” Focusing on all of the helpers out there does serve to give us a sense of peace, and listening to the harrowing stories of people who risked, and in many cases lost, their lives in their effort to help others fills us with an unspeakable sense of pride in humanity.

Last night, hundreds of people came together in Las Vegas for a tribute to the victims and first responders. These shows of unity are the things that make our hearts swell; these are the moments when we are reminded to tell our loved ones that we love them, hug our friends and family that much tighter, and truly appreciate all that we are blessed with, including working within a community like ours where kindness and love abound!
