The first weekend in January is always a really special time for the entire watch and jewelry industry. Friends and colleagues descend on New York City from all over the world, and everyone breaks out their red carpet finest to celebrate at the GEM Awards on Friday night, and again for the 24 Karat Club of New York City dinner on Saturday night.
The GEM Awards are held in the breathtaking Cipriani 42nd Street location. Soaring ceilings and vintage detail throughout the venue provide a sophisticated backdrop to mingle with friends, and honor some of the best of the best in our industry. Caroline Scheufele of Chopard, Sevan Bicakci and Temple St Clair were all in the running for the award for design and ultimately, Temple took home the prize, mentioning from the stage how honored she was to be in such good company. Cartier, Piaget and Roger Dubuis were all honored with a nomination in the watch category, with the venerable Cartier taking home the award. The editorial category nominees were Kyle Anderson of Marie Clair, Rachel Garrahan, a freelance writers for outlets such as The Financial Times and The Jewellery Editor, and Rob Bates of JCK Magazine. Mr. Bates, an undeniable industry stalwart, graciously accepted the honor. A Lifetime Achievement Award was also presented to the imitable Joe Thompson of Watch Time Magazine, who heartwarmingly credited his wife with his success in his field.
The next evening the 24 Karat Club of New York held its annual banquet at The Waldorf Astoria Hotel. What our team was looking forward to even more than seeing the legendary Aretha Franklin perform, was seeing our own Myriam Gumuchian take the stage in her new roll as president of the organization. As she mentioned, the evening had no lengthy program, it was a night simply for enjoying one another’s company and, of course, that’s just what we did until the wee hours of the night!
