Viva Las Vegas with Mizuki

Born in Tokyo, Japan, designer Mizuki moved to New York when she was 10 years old. Her jewelry represents the artist’s own sophisticated style combined with a feminine yet bold edginess, and it is the embodiment of the collision of the two cultures she claims as her own. Named by her grandmother to represent purity, vitality and fluidity in life, Mizuki not only embraces these qualities in her personal character, but they are also the main components in her collection. Here’s how Mizuki Viva’s Las Vegas!

COUTURE: How many years have you been exhibiting at COUTURE?

Mizuki: This will be our 9th year!

COUTURE: COUTURE turns 20 this year….what do you think COUTURE’s birthday theme song should be? 

Mizuki: The theme song from James Bond’s Diamonds Are Forever by Shirley Bassey, because Couture is international, sophisticated, daring and exciting.

COUTURE: If COUTURE were an animal, what would it be and why?

Mizuki: Unique, complex and beautiful as a Peacock.

COUTURE: What do you consider the highlight of COUTURE each year?

Mizuki: COUTURE Design Awards.

COUTURE: What single piece of jewelry are you most excited to showcase this year?

Mizuki: My spinning cube earrings, it’s from the Sea of Beauty collection; they bridge style, edge, sexiness and sophistication in one.

COUTURE: Whose jewelry, other than your own, are you most looking forward to seeing?

Mizuki: That’s an impossible question with so much uniqueness at COUTURE. What I love is walking down the design award cases, guessing who designed what.  I’m always surprised.

COUTURE: Coffee or Tea?

Mizuki: Always coffee in the morning, but during the show, I try to be good and drink tea with honey or lemon.

COUTURE: What’s your “secret weapon” for tackling Las Vegas?

 Mizuki: Anything rose, but I can’t share more than that otherwise it won’t be a secret weapon!

COUTURE: What’s your earliest/most prominent memory of COUTURE?

Mizuki: To this day, I get butterflies when I walk into the show. A few years ago I became the first runner up in the COUTURE Design Awards for Diamonds under $20k.  It was the year when we made a conscious decision to go back to our roots, it was a precious and a proud moment.
