Viva Las Vegas with Nikos Koulis!

Designer Nikos Koulis made a huge splash when he came onto the COUTURE scene a few years ago. His unique designs are distinctive and cutting edge, and his use of color challenges the status quo of what’s expected. We caught up with Nikos to kick off the first in the 2015 installation of our “Viva Las Vegas” blog series. Keep reading to find out Nikos’ preference in caffeine intake, his secret weapon for tackling Vegas, and his take on COUTURE’s spirit animal.

COUTURE: How many years have you been exhibiting at COUTURE?

Nikos Koulis: I love the ambience and the vibrancy of this show and I am very excited to be a part of it for three years.

COUTURE turns 20 this year….what do you think COUTURE’s birthday theme song should be? 

NK: Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars: it’s upbeat, playful and revisits the past with an eye for the future. It’s like Couture: it honors a legacy but it always encapsulates innovation and boldness.

COUTURE: If COUTURE were an animal, what would it be and why?

NK: An exotic bird, residing in a paradise cage, in this case the Wynn.

COUTURE: What do you consider the highlight of COUTURE each year?

NK: The Couture Design Awards where great pieces are showcased.

COUTURE: What single piece of jewelry are you most excited to showcase this year?

NK: I have created many new pieces but I am most thrilled with Oui, a new collection with engagement rings. I particularly love the rings that combine diamonds and emeralds with my black enamel signature setting.

COUTURE: Whose jewelry, other than your own, are you most looking forward to seeing?

NK: Cannot distinguish one, I love to see the inspiration and the craftsmanship of many international designers.

COUTURE: Coffee or Tea?

NK: I am the Espresso type!

COUTURE: What’s your “secret weapon” for tackling Las Vegas?

NK: My jewels of course!

COUTURE: What’s your earliest/most prominent memory of COUTURE?

NK: When I was the second runner up in the 2013 Couture Design Awards, my first year at the show with one of my favorite designs: the Fontana Collection handcuff inspired by Ancient Greek motifs. It brought me a lot of luck: the handcuff was worn by Jennifer Lopez and Rihanna, it was featured in an American Vogue editorial with Kendall Jenner and is one of my best selling statement pieces. Hence, I will always give a credit to Couture for this.
