On the very first day of Couture 2014, I was lucky enough to run into Jennifer McCurry (a.k.a. JJ), the buyer from
Marissa Collections . When I asked her what she thought of the show so far, she noted, “Every one of our current designers have stepped up their game….some have tripled their game!” Without question, the jewelry, more than ever, was the highlight of the show. Designers really did step up their game, taking risks on mixing materials, designing jewelry that is meant to be worn in new ways, and branching into other categories of jewelry; the buzz among retailers and editors was palpable!
There were lots of other buzz-worthy moments as well! Excuse me, after killing it on stage for nearly an hour, Janelle Monae actually got into the pool?! And she did the backstroke?! That was pretty awesome! All of the winners of the Couture Design Awards were so thrilled, and I was so excited that Matthew Rosenheim presented his dad, Jim Rosenheim of Tiny Jewel Box in Washington, DC with the Human Spirit Award! And kudos to Brooklyn-based production company 3rd Strand for producing the amazing, moving, exciting and heartwarming videos for both Human Spirit Award and to kick off the evening! I really could blather on and on, but I’ll leave it to the amazing photography of the talented Sandro de Carvalho to tell (part of) the story of Couture 2014!
