Hilat’s Design Inspiration

Designer Hilat is exhibiting at Couture for the first time this year….we caught up with the venerable designer in his native Istanbul to ask him about the philosophy behind his designs and his thoughts on art and life in Istanbul:

“I appreciate design. I have a big passion for ancient history. I know art and design were born on our lands, in Anatolia, during the ancient history. Istanbul was always the capital of many civilizations; and now we are living on it. I do not appreciate today’s technology on art when I think of art in history. I believe in less is more and I believe that purity is the most beautiful and glamorous thing on earth. That is why, when I think of Istanbul, I see a hidden purity behind its chaos. As I take my inspiration from the ancient lands on which I am now living, I would like to continue the primitive and original way of craftsmanship today. Also as the Anatolian culture is very rich, I would like to represent it with 24K gold, which is also pure. This is how I created the passionate, glamorous, pure and beautiful Hilat Jewelry with my hands 42 years ago. ”
