I’m the first to admit I’m a huge dork. When it comes to music, if it happened after 1992, I really have no personal knowledge of what you’re talking about. I get my news from Howard Stern and NPR exclusively. Beyond that I bury myself in literature, the Romantic poets, Shakespeare…anything in the arena of “cool” I follow the lead of my nieces and nephews. So when our show director, Gannon Brousseau, told me that we’d booked Neon Trees as our opening act, my reaction was a pretty typical “Oh, awesome!” followed by a desperate scrambling to understand what that meant, exactly. I asked my younger sister Jackie, who is out 5 nights a week in Minneapolis listening to cool music, what she thought, and her reaction was, “I LOVE Neon Trees! Can I come?’ And then I asked the ever-fabulous and way younger than me “my Laura,” and her reaction was “Neon Trees?! Seriously?! That’s awesome! We can definitely pull the press with Neon Trees!” Forget about the reaction of the guys at my wine store and the super hot guy at my gym and the bartenders at my local pubs, all of whom told me Neon Trees was IT…
Not willing to rely on my admittedly selective sample, I did some research on my own….from Utah, Mormon, super rockin girl drummer…..I was convinced! Wow! THIS is Couture! Cutting edge, artistic, free-spirited, rockin’….I was psyched to promote this event!!!
And then this past Friday my 10 year old niece and 8 year old nephew came over to my place for a slumber party (I fear the day when staying at “Aunt Shelly’s” studio apartment in Brooklyn is no longer cool) and we fired up YouTube and iTunes and listened to some Neon Trees. As I mentioned before, these kids are my barometer of what’s cool so I was anxious to get their thoughts on Couture’s Opening Night Event. Their reaction was, “Oh, I know THIS, THIS IS AWESOME! CAN WE COME TO COUTURE?!” followed by a pretty superlative Dance Party USA.
And so here I am….telling you that while I am decidedly NOT cool, my nieces and nephew, Naomi and Jonah and Tessa, are VERY cool, as demonstrated in the below photos, and I may just find them hiding out in my suitcase this May when I pack for Couture, just to see our opening night act. It’s official, Neon Trees are super cool. And way Couture. They are true artists, just like our designers, all of whom I’m proud to know and promote. Gannon (aka G-Money) was spot on in booking them so we all need to thank him. Get to know the songs so we can all rock out and pretend we’re cool together! What are you waiting for?! Rock on Couture, rock on….
