A devoted world traveler, French-Mexican jewelry designer Colette spends at least a month traveling each year in order to find inspiration, bringing her sense of wanderlust to each piece in her extensive collections. It was on a trip to Africa last summer with her family—husband Adrian, and kids Ruben, Alexis and Victoria—where Colette found the inspiration to create the group of 100 one-of-a-kind pieces that she’ll be revealing at The Couture Show this year.
Whenever traveling, Colette spends hours standing in one location, quietly taking in her environment and photographing everything she finds interesting. On her most recent travels, Colette and her family visited South Africa, Zambia, Bostwana and Namibia. A full month of “checking out,” away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, allows Colette numerous opportunities to let her creativity flow and infuses her designs with her expanded horizons. A hot air balloon trip over the desert influenced a collection of fire opals and other hues of red and yellow, while a trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana inspired pieces with malachite and emerald groups. Swimming with a great white shark even resulted in a few pieces with teeth hugging and grabbing various stones.
While in Namibia, Colette and her family also discovered a wonderful foundation called N/a’an ku sê Foundation (which means “God Will Protect Us”), which was developed with two main priorities–to protect and conserve Namibia’s vulnerable wildlife, and to improve the lives of the marginalized San Bushman community. At N/a’an ku sê, Colette and her family adopted a baby baboon named Shelah, whose mom had been shot, leaving her alone and defenseless; Shelah now lives safe and sound in their Namibian sanctuary.
Past trips for Colette and her family have included Pompei, Turkey, The Positano, The Greek Islands, Sossusvlei Desert, the Tepozteco en Morelos and the Chiapas in Mexicos, Rome and Florence…our only remaining questions are, where is Colette’s next destination and how will it influence her designs!?
